The Land of the Midnight Sun - Lapland in Serbia

The exhibition about the culture and life of Sami people, inaugurated in the Museum of History of Yugoslavia, on October 6, at 7.00 p.m. opened the manifestation called Lapland in Serbia.

The objects that were presented to our audience were borrowed, for the first time, from the museum SIIDA (The Museum of Sami People): photographs, jewellery and drums.

Great number of visitors was thrilled by the production of the exhibition, but also by the traditional Sami music called yoik. Ulla Pirttijrvi, Sami singer, has explained to our audience the significance and the roll of the yoik, claiming that the yoiks were very similar to shaman songs, and that Sami people were connected to shamanism, not Protestantism, although they were baptized several centuries ago.

The exhibition includes hand made objects made of reindeer leather, as well as silver jewellery, which had both decorative and magic dimension for Sami people.

The visitors will be able to see the exhibition in Belgrade during the following month and after that in Pozarevac and other cities of Serbia. The following events are also planned:
-the week of Sami film
-exhibitions of photographs and sculptures
-concerts
-the week of Sami cuisine
and almost everything you need to know about Lapland…
